Up for sale is a really beautiful Remington Portable Model #3 which was manufactured in America in 1930. I incorrectly typed that this was a #2 in the type sample, however this is certainly a #3. The easiest way to designate between the two models is that the #3 features a red tab key and types without having to raise the typebars with a lever on the side. The #3 continued in the success of Remington's earlier #1 and #2 models, and was extremely small and light for the time considering how many features were packed into this typewriter. To fit in the case, the right hand platen knob can be pushed in towards the platen when a small lever (called the lock lever) is manipulated near the carriage return lever on the left-hand side of the platen. This also locks the carriage directly in the center. This particular typewriter is a beautiful one in near mint shape, and is fully functional right down to the bell. The platen is in great shape and the feed rollers were recently re-covered. The duo-tone paint is probably the highlight of this awesome machine, and I see no reason to believe that it's not original. The labels (as few as there are) are in great shape and are not worn. This Remington portable also comes with a few extras, including the key, a cleaning brush, a keyboard chart, an old type sample from one of the times it was serviced back in the day, operating instructions for Remington desk models (contains typing exercises and tips more than anything), and the thorough owner's manual for the Remington Portable Model 3. Most of the documents are somewhat folded from being cramped in the compartment in the top of the case (see photos), however I am keeping the documents loose inside the case for now so they aren't any more damaged than they already are.
As I mentioned before, this typewriter is fully functional and does work rather well especially considering its age, however I would not recommend this machine if you are looking to write something like a novel on. This typewriter can still be used pretty reliably and is still very fun to type on- it just isn't quite suitable for being an extreme workhorse. As you can see by the type sample, using the red part of the ribbon doesn't come out very clean, however this may possibly improve with use. On the subject of ribbons, this typewriter does not use universal ribbons, so the original spools will need to be re-thread, otherwise a new Remington Portable ribbon can be purchased elsewhere online (eBay). The original handle, which would have been leather, is long gone, however the current replacement handle is functional. If you wish, it's probably not too hard to craft a better replacement handle.
Overall, this is a truly impressive machine in excellent working condition. If you're looking for a colorful classic typewriter than can still be used, then this is a great choice.
