Up for sale is a Montgomery Ward Signature 510 which was made in Japan in 1966. This is the first Signature 500 I've had the chance to work on, and I have to say it's an impressive machine overall. This machine is basically a re-branded Brother JP-3, however this one would have been sold through catalog or discount stores. Compared to many typewriters sold under similar conditions, this one was on the more expensive side, and after playing around with it, it's clear why. This thing is packed with features including a few that many portable typewriters do not usually have. One of these is a "paper injector" function, which is on my Olympia SG1 desktop, but I have not seen on any other portable typewriter. This feature just makes the process of feeding paper a whole lot easier. Another classic feature of this machine is the ribbon color selector which is not a switch, but three buttons.
Overall, this typewriter is in excellent shape, although it has a few scratches and there is some paint missing in the back. Mechanically, this typewriter is an excellent machine to write with. The carriage is a little heavy to return, however it's smooth and very quiet at the same time. This machine uses universal ribbons, and it's very easy to use and care for. I'd definitely recommend this machine for heavy use.
