Up for sale is an impressive Smith-Corona Classic 12 which was purchased new from a Nichols store on October 8, 1985. This typewriter is virtually new-old stock, however it was previously opened and possibly (but not likely) used. The typeheads were- and still are extremely pristine, suggesting that this typewriter was not used, and if it was, it didn't do a lot of typing. The typewriter was most likely kept inside the case, which was kept inside the original box over the years. The carrying case is in mint shape, just as the typewriter is. The typewriter has tape (likely put there at the factory- I have seen this on other SCM models) to protect the paint when the ribbon cover is removed/placed back on the machine. The typewriter itself is in near mint, if not mint shape. See all pictures. This machine comes with everything shown in the photos, including the instructions manual, carrying case, box, other documents, etc. Pretty much everything that would have come with this typewriter is still included, such as the parts that were removed from the typewriter after its first unpacking.
This typewriter is fully functional right down to the bell, and needed very little cleaning/servicing because of how it was kept and cared for. This machine uses universal ribbons (red and black), although this machine was designed for a black and white ribbon (used for corrections), so on the ribbon color selector, when the selector is moved to the white, the typewriter will type in red.
SCM's Classic 12 is equipped with a 12 inch carriage, which can handle a standard 8" x 11" paper fed into the platen oriented either landscape or portrait. The Classic 12 was one of the very last manual typewriters that was truly built to last. Despite being made and sold around 1985, the Classic 12 design was originally designed and used in the 1960s, and went mostly unchanged.
This typewriter can be used very heavily and reliably, however it is also an excellent conversation piece, considering very few typewriters still have their original box and documents, and are in this good of condition.
This typewriter will be packaged inside its original box, which will be carefully bubble-wrapped, and packaged within a new, larger box.
