Up for sale is an uncommon Royal Junior which was manufactured in 1937. This Junior was one of the three Junior models which were made throughout the Great Depression. These typewriters were cheaply manufactured and sold to consumers who did not have a lot of money to spend on a new typewriter during the economic depression. As such, this typewriter lacks features which standard and more expensive typewriters have. There is only a single left margin stop which is mounted on the back of the typewriter, as opposed to two which typically span the whole length of the typewriter's carriage. Because there is only a left margin stop, this typewriter does not have a bell. There is also no backspace key, margin release key, tab key, ribbon color selector, or a left-hand platen knob. The number of Juniors made with this flat-top/squared-off body design is unknown, but I can assure you that this typewriter is not very common, just like many America depression-era machines.
This typewriter itself is in near mint shape overall, and looks stunning. Note that the right-hand paper support was sheared off, but I installed a different support from another Junior that I have laying around (see very last picture- this replacement support was not installed for the rest of the pictures but now is). This typewriter is fully functional, however I would not recommend using this typewriter heavily or frequently. As you can see by the type sample, however, everything does work decently and this typewriter still can be used. Because the Junior lacks a ribbon color selector, only a single-color ribbon can be used, and I would recommend re-threading the original metal spools since they are completely visible (installing new plastic spools would look out of place). The paint is in beautiful shape and shines nearly like a mirror, although it does have a few scratches which are barely noticeable- mostly on the back of the machine. The labels are also pretty sharp, except for the "Junior" label on the paper table which is nearly worn off.
Overall, this is an impressive-looking piece of history which is still completely functional. If you're looking for a conversation piece rather than a novel-typer, then this is an excellent machine.
