Up for sale is a beautiful classic Smith-Corona Silent which was manufactured in 1947. No typewriter represents the '40s quite like this one and its siblings (the Clipper, and Sterling). This particular typewriter is in excellent shape, however it isn't 100% perfect cosmetically. The right hand side of the ribbon cover (see 3rd photo) has some light wear, however it's nothing major and doesn't take much away from this machine's excellent looks. The carrying case is also in great shape, and the latch shines beautifully. Mechanically, this typewriter is perfect and is fully functional right down to the bell. In order to get the paper to feed properly at first, you have to push slightly on the paper while turning the platen knob until the paper is caught by the feed rollers. The typing mechanism is extremely smooth and reliable despite its age, and the touch is very light. This model is one of Tom Hank's favorite typewriters for both its looks and ease of use. Universal ribbons (sold on this site) fit this typewriter, and the owner's manual can be downloaded here: http://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/SmithCoronaFloatingShift1949.pdf
If you're looking for a classic from the '40s that can still be used somewhat heavily and frequently, then this is a perfect option.
