Up for sale is a nice little Smith-Corona Skyriter which was made in 1960. This machine is a 3Y-Series, which- along with an improved, larger carriage return lever, came after the original 2Y-Series Skyriter which was introduced in 1949. The Skyriter went along with the shift in long-distance travel by train to long-distance travel by airplane- hence the "Skyriter" name and the idea that it was supposedly designed to fit beneath the seat of the typical airliner of the day. Despite being all metal, this typewriter is still pretty light and coupled with its small size, makes for a great traveler. This typewriter itself is in near mint shape, and only has one small chip in the paint on the left side of the typebasket cover from the carriage return lever. The leather case is also in impressive shape, although one of the zippers is missing the tiny leather handle. Mechanically, this typewriter is fully functional and makes for an excellent typer. Despite its small size, this typewriter has a smooth and responsive touch. This typewriter can only use a single color ribbon because it was not made with a ribbon color selector. Additionally, the spools are extra small, so you will need to purchase a ribbon designed for the Skyriter (the Smith-Corona Corsair/Corsair Deluxe and Zephyr models have the same spools as well) unless you plan to re-thread the original spools. This typewriter was not ergonomically designed for extremely heavy typing, however it is a reliable machine that is great for typing notes and letters. I wouldn't recommend this for writing a novel.
If you're interested in a cute little portable that was born in the golden age of commercial air travel that can still be used reliably, then this is a perfect choice.
