Up for sale is a beautiful Remington Rand Model 1 which was manufactured amidst the Great Depression in 1938. This typewriter was purchased from its original owner, who had received this typewriter as a gift at a very young age. This machine was cared for very well, and is in near mint shape. The case has some wear, and the original leather on the handle disintegrated, however the underlying metal part of the handle still remains and functions well enough, although I would not want to have to carry this machine by the handle for a significant amount of time. This typewriter is fully functional right down to the bell, and is actually a really nice typer. The Model 1 was referred to as the "noisy noiseless" because it has the noiseless mechanism, also referred to in a 1937 Remington pamphlet as the "Remington Speed Mechanism" although this model didn't have the small weights that pressed the normally noiseless typebars against the platen. Thus, the typebars on this machine hit the platen with enough force to make the classic "clickety-clack" sound.
This typewriter is an excellent typer, and indeed is not as prone to jamming keys as other models are. As such, it's easy to type quickly on this machine and rack up a high WPM rate.
This typewriter's owner's manual can be downloaded here: http://www.machinesoflovinggrace.com/manuals/manual-RemingtonModel1.jpg
Universal ribbons, which are sold on this site, can be used to re-thread the "built in spools" that are on this machine, however keep in mind that this typewriter does not have interchangeable spools like most other traditional machines. There are various sources that provide thorough instructions on how to change the ribbon when the time comes, and I can provide a few upon request. Keep in mind that a fresh ribbon is installed and should last for several months to years depending on use.
If you're looking for an absolutely stunning classic from the '30s that still can be used frequently and reliably, then this is a great machine.
