1963 Smith-Corona Sterling
Up for sale is a beautiful blue Smith-Corona Sterling (5AX-Series) which was made in 1963. This typewriter is in near mint shape overall, and is fully functional right down to the bell. Cosmetically, this typewriter has very few scratches or flaws. There is no rust anywhere on this machine. The carrying case is also in good shape, although there is a small crack on the latch near the handle, however I do not believe the crack diminishes the strength of the handle and thus the functionality of the case (see 2nd to last photo)
This 5AX Sterling is one of my favorite post-war portables, and many collectors and novelists like it as well. This model combines Smith-Corona's super reliable and smooth mechanism that was featured on all the mid-sized manual portables from the 1960s-1980s with the "Super 5" body style. In my opinion, this more streamlined body style is much more appealing than the "Galaxie" or Classic 10/12 body. The beautiful blue color makes it especially attractive.
As I've said, this typewriter is an excellent machine to write on, and is a very smooth typer. It types in the standard pica font- 10 characters per inch. This machine is also extremely easy to use and care for, and uses universal ribbons which are sold on this website. The owner's manual for this machine can be downloaded for free here: http://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/SCSterlingManual1963.pdf
Overall, if you are in the market for a beautiful machine that doubles as an extremely dependable workhorse which is ready for heavy and frequent use, then this would be one of my highest recommendations.
