1938 Underwood Portable "E" Model
Up for sale is a nice Canadian-made Underwood Portable "E" Model which was manufactured in 1938. This machine is in amazing shape overall, but has some minor cosmetic flaws, such as on the left ribbon spool cover, where care must be taken with the spool cover to avoid removing the crinkle paint which has begun to crack. Other than the spool cover, the paint is in remarkable shape all around the typewriter, and looks great, as do the labels. The carrying case is also in great shape for its age, and has preserved the machine rather well over the years.
Mechanically, this typewriter is in fully functional shape, and is a great typer for its age. There is no bell (originally from the factory, it did not come with one- it's not "missing") and there is also not a ribbon color selector, so despite having a dual-color ribbon installed, only the top portion of the ribbon (black) can be used. The forward 2 rubber feet have been replaced, as the originals had fallen off.
The owner's manual can be downloaded here (for a similar model): https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/Underwoodportable1931.pdf
Universal ribbons which are sold on this site fit this machine fine, however keep in mind that the empty spool will need to be wound in the opposite direction that it comes wound in.
This would not be my first choice for heavy writing such as a novel, however this machine can still definitely stand up to frequent or occasional typing without any issues at all.
