1952 Smith-Corona Silent (5S Series)
Up for sale is a Smith-Corona Silent which was made in America in 1952. This machine is the 5S Series of the "Silent" model, and is a classic '50s machine that was very popular. Despite the model name, this typewriter is no more or less silent than the average manual typewriter. This machine in particular is in fair shape overall, but has some definite cosmetic flaws; primarily with the paint but also some of the metal which has some surface rust. Luckily this typewriter has been thoroughly cleaned and lubricated, and so none of the surface rust impacts the functionality of this machine. This typewriter is a very smooth machine to write with, and is fully functional down to the bell. Along with the cosmetic flaws, the only other thing that this machine has going against it is that the carrying case lid is missing, and so only the base is included. If you can appreciate the hunt, a full carrying case could be located on eBay or potentially even locally online (facebook marketplace, for example) and would add some value to this machine.
As I mentioned, despite its cosmetic flaws, this typewriter is an excellent machine to write with and can definitely be used heavily for years to come. If you're in the market for a cheaper machine with classic looks that can be used reliably, then this is a great purchase if you don't mind the missing lid and imperfections cosmetically. Universal ribbons fit this typewriter perfectly (and are sold on this site). The owner's manual for this machine can be viewed for free here: https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/SC1951.pdf
