1936 Underwood Universal
Up for sale is a nice Underwood Universal portable which was manufactured in the USA in 1936. This machine is in really impressive shape all around, and is fully functional in all aspects. The only downsides with this machine is that it is missing the original ribbon spool covers, and the rubber feet could be replaced as they are hard, and the front-right foot is detached and stays secured in the case. Replacement feet are available on eBay or Etsy for $60, however I am deciding to sell this typewriter at a slightly reduced price to allow the buyer to either use the typewriter as-is, or to budget to replace the feet. If the buyer wishes, I can order the feet and replace them at the full price prior to shipping.
Other than that, this typewriter is a beauty. The original black paint shines like a mirror on every angle, and the nickel plated parts are also impressive. Additionally, the gold labels are all crisp and have little to no wear. The carrying case is in good condition for its age, although the leather handle shows evidence of wear and age and is starting to come apart slightly.
Universal ribbons do fit this machine since the spool covers are missing (otherwise the universal spools and the covers would bind and not work properly).
This machine types in a slightly smaller elite font, but it is still very much crisp and legible. The owner's manual for Underwood Portables from the '30s can be found here: https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/Underwoodportable1931.pdf
If you're looking for a beautiful '30s machine that can still be used heavily and reliably and is also relatively easy to use and care for, then this is a great option to choose from.
