1930 Underwood Portable Model C
Up for sale is a nice Underwood Portable Model C which was manufactured in the USA in 1930. This machine is in great shape all around, and is fully functional in all aspects, however the feed rollers are a bit worn and so the paper does not feed that well until the paper is fed in with a little extra effort (using the paper release and manually pushing it in) until the paper reaches the paper bail, at which point it feeds and advances normally. This machine is missing the original ribbon spool covers. The rubber feet on the base that the typewriter attaches to could also be replaced.
Other than that, this typewriter is a great looking machine. The original black paint shines nicely for the most part, although there are some flaws as can be seen in the photos. The nickel plated parts are also in impressive shape and shine nicely. The labels are all fairly worn, particularly on the rear of the machine. The carrying case is in exceptionally good condition for its age, although the leather handle is missing. The warranty card is filled out inside the lid, giving some interesting insight into this machine's past.
Universal ribbons do fit this machine and are sold on this site.
This machine types in the standard pica typeface at 10-pitch. The owner's manual for Underwood Portables from the '30s can be found here: https://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/Underwoodportable1931.pdf
If you're looking for a beautiful '30s machine that can still be used heavily and reliably and is also relatively easy to use and care for, then this is a great option to choose from.
